The Innovation Project “StemNet”: Clarity Solutions Networks Stem Cell ExpertsAs part of a cooperative project to build up a web-based Knowledge Management System in the field of stem cell transplantation (“StemNet”), Clarity is developing a “Virtual Auditorium”. The integration of a telephone application into a web portal specifically for the exchange of information between experts in spoken language is unique among medical knowledge platforms.
Registered users can identify other users focusing on similar topics and – as appropriate to the complexity of the subject matter – invite them to take part in audio panel discussions or participate themselves. These discussions are announced in a web calendar; registered users can make a note of the dates and will be sent a reminder message.
In implementing a voice application into the KMS, the project managers – in addition to Clarity AG they are MHH Hannover Medical School and Friedrich Schiller University of Jena – aim to speed up the transfer of research results into the treatment of patients with haematological tumours.
Today, the transplantation of stem cells is customary practice in the treatment of leukaemia and other malignant cancers of the blood. Here, assessing the tolerability of the transplant is vital. “StemNet” supports physicians and biologists in research and clinical practice by using data mining processes to homogenise heterogeneous data for the first time, making clinically relevant knowledge available through a single platform. Its unique feature is the implementation of a telephone application enabling registered users to contact each other using the most natural medium in the world – the spoken word – and discuss the results of research.
The “StemNet” project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and coordinated by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) division for New Media in Education and Scientific Information (NMB+F).
